Friedebert Tuglas

Friedebert Tuglas (1886–1971) Estonian writer, exerted a steady and profound influence on the whole evolution of Estonian literature during the 20th century. He was a leading figure of the "Noor-Eesti" (Young Estonia) movement, and is considered to be the master of Estonian short story. Caught up in the events of the 1905 revolution, Tuglas fell foul of the Czarist authorities at the age of nineteen. After three months in prison, he lived in several European countries and visited several more over a decade as a homeless wanderer. He was editor of the literary journal Looming and honorary member of the PEN Club in London.
